When did it all start?

Panel 1: A man in Victorian costume is seated in an armchair wearing slippers. An identical man with a top hat stands before him holding out a sheet of paper with writing on it. The seated man says: Good heavens! Who are you?! The standing man says: I bring you this Panel 2: The seated man is reading the document and exclaims: Extraordinary! The standing man says: It is the design for a time machine Panel 3: The seated man has put down the document. He says: How did you come by this? The standing man puts his hand to his chin and says: I was in my study one evening... Panel 4: The final panel is a repeat of the first panel but with a think bubble around the entire image.
