Evidence

Even though we have all the evidence, we can't help making a judgement on what we see in front of us.

Panel 1: A woman in a tweed skirt and glasses is sitting in a chair. Opposite her is a young man sitting in a chair. Between them is a man dressed in a white coat holding a clipboard. He says: Good morning, Mr Graham - thanks for participating in our study. Please meet Monica. Monica is a working age woman living in the UK. Your first question is: How likely is it that Monica is a librarian?
Panel 2: The researcher has turned to the subject and is writing on his clipboard. The subject says: I'd say it's highly likely.
Panel 3: Now we see a pie chart with the title: Librarians working in the UK. The pie is almost entirely blue, which is labelled: Total UK working age population. There is a tiny slice labelled: Librarians. The researcher continues: Mr Graham, as you can see from this chart, there are 36,300 librarians working in the UK out of a total working age population of 37.5 million - That's about one in a thousand. So, I'll ask you again, Mr Graham: How likely is it that Monica is a librarian?
Panel 4: The researcher is holding his hand to his face. The subject points at Monica and says: She looks like a librarian!
